July Owlcrate Unboxing and Review: Good vs Evil

IMG_8543

It’s finally here! After months of watching unboxings, reading reviews and drooling over the contents I ordered my first Owlcrate box thanks to a promotional code from Cece over at ProblemsofaBookNerd. This was slightly more pricey than other crates I’ve tried BUT I have to say that I’m impressed with the contents and it was well worth the wait. This month’s theme was Good vs Evil, half of the boxes are good and half evil, the book is the same but the box is a surprise. While I got the evil box, my cousin got good and it was nice to see the difference between them.

Death Star Necklace

As most of you know I am obsessed with Star Wars  I love it and so finding a little necklace of the Death Star in it! Now, I am slightly jealous because the good crate got the Millenium Falcon because obviously I’m with the Force. That said I love this, it is beautifully made. Also, please excuse any stray at hair in the picture, Suki decided she also liked the crate.

Draco Malfoy Funko Pop

Ah Draco, angry, confused, although I don’t know if I’d go as far as evil. I was stupidly excited to receive this, even though I already have the pop (because I have a Harry Potter obsession and so I have all but 3 of the pops now). This is  a GREAT addition to the box, absolutely fab!

The Red Queen Bookmark

A classic villain for this little magnetic bookmark, an adorable design and so cute too!

IMG_8548

Harper Collins mini colouring book

I LOVED this idea. Harper Collin’s have included a small colouring book full of their YA covers, I’d love to see more of these, because who doesn’t love colouring!

IMG_8547

Here are some of the bits and pieces included, including the breakdown of this month’s box, a sticker and a hint of next month’s box which will also include Harry Potter!

IMG_8546

This Savage Song – Victoria Schwab

I let out a squeal of joy when I found this in my box, I’ve had this on my to read list and now I have my own copy!! So exciting! The cover is beautiful and it came with a letter from the author and a signed sticker (which I’ve placed inside). I can’t wait to get stuck in to read about the monster’s that Schwab have created.

 IMG_8555

I absolutely loved my first Owl Crate, so I’m going to be keeping my subscription, especially as there are going to be Harry Potter related goodies in it! As always I’d love to know your thoughts, so pop them in the comments below!

Anxious Days.

3a1ba44f0e684f6d5627202e69373426

When you live with a mental illness it doesn’t matter how well your life is going, how much success you’ve had it will rear its head at some point. In fact when everything is going right I find it even harder to deal with. Earlier this week Prince Harry spoke about mental illness , a quote of his really stuck with me;

“A lot of people think if you’ve got a job, if you’ve got financial security, if you’ve got a family, you’ve got a house, all that sort of stuff, everyone seems to think that is all you need and you are absolutely fine to deal with stuff,” – Prince Harry

I’m incredibly pleased and proud that the royal family are using their status to highlight mental illness. Harry’s mother, Princess Diana also suffered from mental illness. When I realised I wasn’t just sad, I was very sick I looked up famous people with mental illnesses. It sounds silly, but I needed to know that other people had made something of their lives, even when they’d felt as bad as I had. I needed to know that other people had carried on and after being diagnosed it gave me a little bit of hope.

There was never a time when I thought oh everything’s going great, I’m fine, I’m going to be happy forevvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeerrrrrr. But, even so, sometimes I forget how lonely it can feel. It doesn’t matter that I have a loving family, partner, job the energy just kind of drains from me and I just wonder around. I question everything and feel so upset over the slightest thing. Going into London on a particularly low day was hard, the people, the rush, anxiety crept through my body and made me just want to hide. From that I got angry and frustrated, why was I like this? Why did my brain do this. I felt so confused and like some huge freak. This is what it’s like on bad days for me.

As I’m writing this, I’m feeling more like myself and because I’m now home I’m a lot calmer. There’s good in my life and there is bad and it’s a balance. I won’t hide from my readers, my Twitter followers that side of my life, because it’s real. I would rather have a smaller readership and an honest blog, than one that is polished and false, because people need to know that they’re not alone. So if you’re reading this and you’re struggling, for whatever reason, remember that you have the strength, you’re not a freak or whatever your head tries to tell you when you’re sick. You’re not alone.

Book Review: Water For Elephants

43641

The novel opens with a prologue from a young Jacob Jankowski, describing the one time disaster broke out in his beloved circus, wetting the reader’s appetite for the destruction to come later on. Although after doing this the next chapter is rather depressing and slow compared to the ideas of the prologue. Fast forward a good 50/60 years and Jacob is alone grumpy, old and starting to loose his mind a little in a nursing home where the only good thing is a sweet nurse and the fact that the circus is finally coming to town possibly for the last time Jacob will ever see it (throughout the novel we are forced back and forward, which to some could be seen as slightly depressing)

After the excitement regarding the circus Jacob is forced to sit alone after an argument with a fellow resident claiming he ‘carried water for the elephants’, but going back to his youth Jacob knows this is a lie after all he was the vet on one of the ‘greatest circus’ on earth’. This sets the tone for the whole novel, as the reader is constantly drawn to and from the past which in a way makes this a story of triumph tinged with sadness throughout, as we know how it ends with Jacob waiting for his children, waiting to get back a piece of his life and true love, Marlena.

Young Jacob is a student with dreams of being a vet and getting that one girl to sleep with him, although in one day his whole life, happiness and studies are destroyed by the sudden death of his parents. Going home he learnt he has lost everything he thought he had. His father has been in crippling debt just so that Jacob had the education he needs. Alone, heartbroken and penniless Jacob has no way of going back to college and no job prospects Jacob decides to take a risk. He’s manages to wing his way onto the circus as the circus vet.

Although beware! Do not expect this novel to be all glitter, spangles and performing monkeys, Gruen’s tale will break your heart. The Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth may be spectacular but in more ways than you can imagine adultery, prostitution, murder, lies, secrets and of course romance. From the very beginning Jacob is hooked on the beautiful Marlena a horse entertainer, she is truly the beauty and the heart of the circus especially with dreams of performing with the ‘dumb elephant’  Rosie, that the circus has just acquired. However there is a catch, despite Jacob’s love  for Marlena and the animals, he must work over the watchful and evil ring master, August, who is also coinsidently Marlena’s husband. Yes it is obvious he has reached a problem.

Although through the help of friends he aquires along the way (although let me tell you he starts off as the lowest of the low with a lot to learn) Jacob begins his battle to save Marlena from her abusive husband and finally teach Rosie in a way that nobody else could. It has been said that the real hero of this story is not Jacob at all, that the real hero is Rosie (for later events that I won’t spoil now), a beautiful creature who is not as ‘stupid’  that people are lead to believe. However with a bit of a psycho at the head of it all, it’s obvious that life and love will not run smoothly.

Gruen has done a beautiful job with description, it is simple to image everything you read. To see Marlena’s acts and Rosie’s beauty while feeling Jacob’s pain. The reader is transported to another time and another world the smells, the feelings, everything. The only criticism I can give is when it goes back to old Jacob, yes it’s vital and there for a reason but it does get dull and you do want to skip it, however this said once finished I put down my book and discovered it was one of the best books I have ever read.

I give this beauty 5 stars *****. For the nearly flawless storytelling and an amazing plot line! I will forever be disappointed by the circus from now on.

15 Things I’ve Learnt Having a Sister

2015-07-31 18.13.19

Today is my baby sister’s 15th birthday, 15!!! In my eye’s she’s still the one year old I pushed to school on her first birthday present, still the 4 year old who wanted to follow me around school, never mind that she’s got a better social life than me now! For tonight’s post I wanted to write about 15 things I’ve learnt having the littler one around for 15 years.

Babies will throw up anywhere, so don’t hold them over over you with an open mouth

You can always prove doctors wrong

(Sum’s was born with bad hips, the doctors said she wouldn’t walk before she was 3…she was walking at just over a year old)

You always have someone to get opinions on outfits/hair just a phone call away

There is no fiercer love than that between sisters

You deal with both of us when you hurt one of us

There are more ways than I can count to annoy your sister

No clothes, bags or make up is safe from being ‘borrowed’

You always have a secret keeper

They’ll tell you when you’re talking BS

They give the best hugs when your world isn’t going that great

Very few other people can make you laugh to the point of nearly peeing yourself

You will copy each other and then deny it

You, and only you, can insult your sister, anyone else needs to watch out

Never leave your phone unlocked around your sister.

You never choose to be related but you choose to be best friends.

Sunday Seven: Star Wars Celebrations Europe

It’s been all over Twitter and they’re the hottest tickets for any Star Wars fan! Yes this year Star Wars celebration came to London! So Ali and I hit up the Excel centre today to see some of the incredible sights in our closest city. So, for tonight’s Sunday Seven I wanted to share with you seven of the best parts from today!

IMG_8062IMG_8064 (1)

Giant builds.

These were absolutely huge and so, so cool. It was so busy though these were the best pictures I could get, it would have been so cool to sit in them.

IMG_8055

Lego Rey and BB8

Now, for my birthday I’m hoping to get a Lego Millennium Falcon so seeing this was incredible. I mean look at that BB8, who wouldn’t want to take him home!

IMG_8061 (1)

Bumping into R2-D2

After buying something I heard a familiar noise, turning around I realised that R2-D2 was behind me! Not only was that in itself insanely cool as he was just strolling around the event (along with other droids)  he was also signed! One of THE coolest things I’ve ever seen.

IMG_8079

Giant Chewie Funko

For some reason Ali wouldn’t let me bring this Pop home… I can’t think why.

IMG_8072

Seeing CARRIE FISHER.

Now I love the original cast and Carrie is not only hilarious but a great writer we wandered off only for her to come back to where we were standing after her panel. We were standing really close to her and honestly that alone was worth the ticket price. Carrie Fisher, CARRIE FISHER.

IMG_8076

Celebration Swag

I didn’t go as mad as I thought I would. I DID get the exclusive celebration Pop Vinyls, one that is exclusive to Smugglers Bounty and a Yoda (because Ali persuaded me too) which I’m really excited about because the UK rarely gets exclusives. I also got a con exclusive Ewok family (how cute!), the colouring book I’ve been after for a while and along the bottom is my pass to get into the show. All in all a pretty good haul.

IMG_8051

A nod to Princess Leia

Now I didn’t go in full cosplay because it was very hot BUT I did manage to get my hair in these Leia style buns and a short white dress.

9 Animals, 9 Lots of Love.

I’ve always been around animals. Throughout my entire life I’ve had animals around me and not having any in my first year of university drove me insane. Sometimes animals are better company than people, they might be dependant but they’ll love you unconditionally. Today we had a little bit of a scare with Noodle, she has a little bit of swelling above her eye and so after her first trip to the vets and some (very expensive) medicine the swelling is starting to go down, thank goodness. While I was waiting and worrying I thought of all the animals currently in my life and how much I love them. They don’t last forever so we have to love them as much as possible while we care for them, so here are 9 of my loves (not in order).  IMG_8041

Suki

Suk’s is the Miller’s cat, she was one when she was first brought home and has been here ever since. She likes climbing on my laptop, sitting on my feed and pretending she’s starving. IMG_7425

Ed and Lottie

My big fur babies! Lot’s has been with us since she was a puppy and Ed since he was a tiny kitten. They’re both now 9 and 9 months and I couldn’t think of life without them. Lottie has been my constant companion through some really tough parts of my life, she even guards me when I’m sick.

IMG_7872

Betsy

Betsy is a new addition to the family. She’s my aunt’s Cockapoo puppy and Ali and I have fallen in love with her. It’s nice having a puppy around, she’s excited by EVERYTHING.

Millie, Monty and Max

These are my MIL’s boyfriends dogs. They’re not the kind of dogs I’m used to BUT they are incredibly sweet and always want cuddles.

Hamski and Noodle

My babies, I picked them out and took them home. These are the first pet’s that are registered as mine that I chose ( I chose Lottie too but she lives with Mum and Dad) and are my responsibility. I can’t explain my love for my girls.

Update: There are two more animals that I adore but I didn’t have good pictures of them. Bob, my Cockatiel who lives with my Mum who sings beautifully and Fudge, my sister’s hamster who’s an absolute cutie.

How about you? Tell me about your pets and what they’re like in the comments below!

Basingstoke Live 2016

Well I’m writing this almost falling asleep after all the excitement of this weekend. I did it, after going to Basingstoke live since it started 9 years ago, No People Club took to the main stage of the festival at 7pm and ABSOLUTELY ROCKED IT. We played a new song and I honestly think it’s the best we’ve ever played and the best we’ve ever sounded.

I went straight from work on Friday to pick Rhys and Dan up to the rehearsal space, practiced for 4 hours, came back and finally slept before getting up and doing the festival. It felt incredible we were playing to so many people, people were dancing, singing along, it couldn’t have been any better. Singing the lyrics and basically singing a map of my life for the past few years just stirred these feelings deep in me and I realised I can’t stop doing this. I LOVE performing, I love the guys and we’ll do whatever it takes to make sure we can carry on with this. I have the memories from the day and night (including going out to the pub with my Mum, Ali’s Dad, the boys and Abbie) and I think it was something I needed. This isn’t the end, it’s just the beginning.

The Gym Return.

0a1b0c6a34ffb52bfb6270fff48ad876

On Monday night I sat down and set up a gym membership, my goal was to get back to my workout routine pre deadlines. I have to admit knowing that I’m going to have to fit it around work rather than having my chilled sessions with Alice made me think twice about signing up. That said after my routine slipped I noticed that I put back on a little bit of weight and I wasn’t feeling as good in myself. With the move as well my mental health has been more tricky to deal with so I needed to dose myself up with some gym love.

I’m writing this, and I know it will be short, curled up in blankets and trying not to fall asleep but I feel SO GOOD. My body aches but I’m just proud of myself for getting off my ass and going after work. It helped that I went with my sister too and got to work out and talk to her. The most important thing is that I’m doing this for myself. I want to get fitter and try to help the pain in my spine, I want to be able to help my depression by working out. Losing weight is a plus but it’s not the reason I’m going any more, feeling healthy is much more important than what anyone else thinks of me or my body.

Gramps.

IMG_7927

When I was between 1 and 2 years old I would stand in my cot and shout DAN-DAD at the top of my voice until my Gramps came home from work, much to my Mum’s dismay I would not sleep until I knew he was at the house. When I was 7 I went to London to go on the London Eye, go on a boat and see the Tower of London. When I was 13 I would go and sit every Sunday I could and watch TV and have cups of tea while talking about history. When I was 16 I would debate politics for hours. When I was 18 I was taken to the station to get my train to university for the first time. Now I’m 21 and I have a gym buddy and I still sit for hours drinking tea and talking and I still debate politics, although it gets a little more intense now. Today, my Gramps turns 70, he’s one of my favourite people in the world. We’re so close and I count my blessings every day that we are that close and have that relationship.

Happy Birthday Gramps, you’re one in a million.
