How to Switch Off From Social Media

When some people say that Social Media is their life, you may think that they’re being dramatic but hold fire because I’m being serious. You see more than loving my Twitter, Facebook and Instagram these platforms are my full-time job. I spend 8 hours a day thinking, planning, checking and considering social in one way or another. So, how on earth do you switch off?

I’ll be honest with you this is not going to be a post that tells you of the incredible detox and how I’m a new person. That’s not me at all, I love it. But, just like everyone else I need to take a breather from time to time. I have found some ways that aren’t deleting apps on your phone or taking holidays if that works though you do you.

Have something else to take up your time

For me, this is reading. That doesn’t mean I can’t post about something I’ve read later (yes, I’m on Goodreads too) but going into a fictional world helps you get away and back into your own mind.

Try and have a cut off at night

I try to have a cut-off of 10.30pm (I know this doesn’t always work). After that time it’s for me, which leads me on to my next point…

Have an evening routine

I have a routine in the evening which is focused on me. Just little things that aren’t anything to do with my phone or social, I’ll make sure that I put some music on and have a shower or bath, read a little bit, get some nice PJs on etc.

If you have to have your phone keep it in a bag

When I go out it’s so easy to have my phone in a pocket, I can feel it vibrate or hear it but I realised that when it’s in the depths of my bag (and I am very stereotypical about having a lot in my bag) I still have access if I need it but can go about my day.

Read

I’ve mentioned this a lot in this blog but it’s my main way to disconnect and get away for a little bit. Recently, I have a lot of fantasy on the go and I LOVE it.

Remember you’re allowed to walk away

It’s easy to get caught up and feel like you have to be online all the time and constantly interacting BUT it’s ok to take a break. You don’t need to apologise on social channels for some time away, although a lot of people do!

What do you do to unwind and get off of social media? Let me know in the comments below!

My Goals For 2018

Welcome to 2018! January 1st, the start of a whole new year. If you’ve been following my blog for longer than a year, first of all, thank you so much you’re amazing, anyway, you’ll know I don’t like New Year’s resolutions. I say it, again and again, every year. Long story short, it’s cold, it’s miserable. Why start something new when it’s kinda shitty and everyone feels a little down?

So I’m all about making goals and they don’t need to be big or have a huge final solution. They can be whatever you want them to be and you can start them when you feel ready! So I do have a few goals for myself BUT with the idea that I want to start them. It doesn’t have to be finished by the 31st December 2018 at 11.59 but if it’s started then I’m pleased.

Get to 5000 Twitter Followers

Originally I wanted to do this in 2017 but it didn’t happen but I did get to 4000 which is a great start. So I’m going to work to get to this goal and connect with more people.

Start working on my first book…whatever that may be!

I’ve wanted to write a book for years, I get ideas, I start writing, I hate everything I write, I stop. The cycle goes on and on. I need to carry on writing, even if I think it’s awful because the end result might not be…

Work towards a healthy weight

My weight has really changed in the past few years there’s a lot of factors, the biggest of which was breaking my spine, but other things too. Emotionally I wasn’t in a good place during the early part of last year but I did make a change. Between July and November, I lost just under half a stone, which is a start but I want to continue to make progress. I know what my goal is but it’s very personal and I don’t want to share it.

Write more poetry

I’ve loved writing poetry more this year and really getting into it. I’ve even published a poem here! I want to work on it and maybe share a little more…

Be a kinder to myself

Sometimes I’m too hard on myself, I’m gonna try and change that this year.

Work my ass off in my job and see results

I started a job as a Social Media Manager in 2017 on a new project which is really exciting. I want to work hard and see results and see it grow. I’m so excited.

Manage my Anxiety in a healthy way!

I’m a lot better than I was with my Mental Health but it’s an ongoing thing, I want to carry on getting my anxiety under control.

Growing & Keeping Your Twitter Followers!

In the last few years, I’ve worked to try and organically grow my Twitter following. As I write this I have 3702 Twitter followers. While to many it might not sound huge or impressive, it’s taken some work. I’m not a big Youtube star or self-employed blogger, nor have I ever used a bot or paid for my followers. While it’s still a little way off of my goal of 5K by the end of the year I fully believe that I can do it! If you’re looking for a way to get to 10K fast, this isn’t the blog for you BUT if you want to know how little by little you can build a great following then you’re in the right place.

I first got Twitter a few years ago and barely used it, it’s only in the past 2 years I’ve really gotten into Twitter and increasing my followers. So, I’ve learned a few things about being authentic while still getting steady growth. Since January I’ve gained over 100 followers a month, and some of those months I haven’t been at my most active!

Engage with the followers you have

There is no use trying to build a following if you ignore the people that are already there. Tweet your existing followers, follow them back if you find them interesting! Engagement is key and is what will make people want to check in with you/ your projects

Follow people who interest you and in turn, they may find you interesting!

It’s no use following people just because you want to be followed back. You want people who are going to engage and make Twitter more interesting for you. So follow people you have an interest in and don’t judge accounts if they’re small. Who’s more likely to follow you, Kylie Jenner or the newbie blogger? Think about it.

Use apps like Crowdfire to see who’s following you, who’s unfollowed

I have a huge online pet peeve for people unfollowing you once you’ve followed back (it’s not cool) so apps like Crowdfire are really helpful to see who’s following you and who’s staying following you!

Use relevant Hashtags

Seems easy enough right? Using Hashtags can connect you with THE most awesome people, I was mentioned in the New York Times online once! You can debate or share an admiration for the same things, it’s a great way to find new people to follow and get more followers yourself.

Link people in your tweets

Whenever I review anything I always tweet the company or the person I’m Tweeting about, you never know who’s watching! I’ve spoken to some lovely people online, gotten signed books and got to meet a few celebs too! All through Twitter!

Join Twitter chats for your interests!

There are so many chats online every day for all time zones. It’s a great way to meet new people online and I always get at least one new follower from each chat that I partake in.

Think before you Tweet!

Think, think, think. Some people can Tweet rude or obnoxious things and get a huge unfollowing. It’s great to have thoughts and opinions but not at the expense of someone else!

7 Reasons Sarah Millican is one of the greatest comedians around

50476a

On Friday night I went to see the opening night of Sarah Millican’s Outsider tour. I’d never seen her live before but had laughed a lot after watching on TV so when I could get tickets I snapped them up. I’m so glad I went, Sarah was absolutely incredible and hilarious. For tonight’s Sunday Seven I thought I’d tell you why I think Sarah is so great and if I could I’d go see her again on her tour Outsider (there are still tickets available, just nowhere close to me!).

She’s funny without being mean

I love comedy and have been to quite a few shows now of different comedians but Sarah isn’t an arsehole about other people, which is a nice change. She’s hilarious but doesn’t need to go after other people in her routine. Total respect.

She’s honest about body image

m5sFDNY.gif

People have been awful to Sarah in the past but she’s honest about how much she doesn’t care. When I was watching her show I just felt so much better about myself and my own body image. When you put on weight people can be cruel but Sarah wasn’t having any of it, if you want cake, eat cake.

She’ll stand up to the media and be still be classy af

Screen Shot 2016-05-15 at 16.25.37.png

When the media and Twitter trolls mocked Sara for her choice in dress for the BAFTA awards she didn’t get angry and take everyone down, she wrote honestly about her feelings then decided she didn’t care and wore the dress again. Classy af.

Her accent.

The Geordie accent is one of the best in the world. End of.

She talks about IBS

When she started talking about IBS I was so happy. It’s something that is embarrassing and ‘not cool’, does Sarah care? No. I just wanted to stand up and shout YES SARAH ALL THE IBS LOVE but, you know, you’re not supposed to do that.

Her pets are her world

qL1gm

I loved hearing about her pets and how hilarious they are. From one pet lover to another, I salute you.

She’s the best with her audiences

Again, she’s never mean and calls her audience members Pet and Flower, as well as giving out free badges on tour. What more could you ask for

Now that I’ve settled into 2016, back to uni and in some kind of strange routine I can think about what I want to achieve on my blog this year. I’ve just hit 300 daily subscribers and I now have over 1500 followers on Twitter, if that is any of you that are reading now, thank you so much it was a great start to the year. It’s because of that I’ve tried to think of either things I’d like to achieve and do this year. I’ve whittled it down to just 5 things that I’d like to do.

1. Reach 2000 followers on Twitter and at least 100 more subscribers

2. Start a YouTube channel. I have my camera, tripod and some ideas, I’d like to try it and post 1 video a week.

3. Have regular posts, I already have weekly book reviews but I’d like to do a monthly feature on other bloggers and start ‘Sunday Seven’ my 7 top things of the week, which I’m hoping to start next week!

4.  Work on bigger ideas for posts, more in the lifestyle category.

5. Enjoy! I absolutely love writing this blog, it gives me something to focus on and I’ve connected with a lot of people through it. There will be changes and I won’t be a full time student come July but I won’t be stopping!

Date Night, Live Music, and the New York Times

LM_Packshot

Today and yesterday have been a whirlwind of crazy. A lot of exciting things have been happening in the past week as well as having to deal with a lot of stressful situations…I think today was just very weird.

Last night I got to finally take a trip to Bush Hall where Ali works part time as a Sound Engineer. I had no idea how special this place was on the walls there are pictures of Amy Winehouse, Courtney Love, Panic at the Disco, Paul Weller, Adele, Duffy, Ed Sheeran, Florence and the Machine, Lily Allen and The Killers to name just a few. It makes me incredibly proud that Ali works there. We got tickets to see a band called Little May, they are from Australia and I think they’re definitely one to watch, I also fell in love with a singer called Gordie, another one I’ll be watching closely.

I love spending time doing things with Ali, we both get so busy that when we’re back at the we just kind of fall into a chair and talk across the room, or just lay in bed and watch TV together. We have a lot planned together in the next month or so, it’s going to be great to actually do couples things. Which started with a trip to Nandos, as you do.

So that was the awesome part, now on to the weird. I received a tweet this morning saying that I’d been quoted in the New York Times… yep! I didn’t get contacted about it so it was a total surprise, you can read it here.

So it’s been a crazy few days! I have a lot planned for the rest of the week too, obviously Thursdays book review and my first society social, Friday I’m going to be at a show so I’ll be putting up another post, Saturday I’m working and then I might actually get to relax and rest on Sunday. Phew. As always thank you so much for reading and to my great followers!

Why do I blog? Two years on and what started it all.

For the last few days I’ve been spending my time with some great students. These guys are around 16/17, just finished their first year of college or sixth form and are thinking about going to university and we got to show them around, take them to taster lectures and answer any questions that they had. So I loved working with these guys and they asked some great questions, one of which really got me thinking. Why do I blog?

Ah! Why do I blog? I really had to think so I just kind of went through the last few years and realised that it might be an idea to share it with you guys. SO first blog, my first blog was about books surprise, surprise.Basically my Mum was always nagging me to get rid of some books every time I bought new ones, so as a reason to keep them I set out to review as many as possible and fell in love with it. I done that weekly for about two years until I realised that I wanted to write about my experiences of uni.

I wanted to create a second blog for a while and played around with ideas and themes while I was 18 until I realised what wanted to read. I wanted to read about people like me. People who had no idea about uni, started completely clueless and to tell the truth about what it was really like. Around the same time I finally got a mental health diagnoses and I was passionate about including that too. So this blog was born on the 1st September 2013 (although it’s changed names several times before I realised my own name was pretty awesome).

The beautiful picture of a very fresh faced looking me the week I got into university, aww.

I knew what I wasn’t your typical student, at the time I didn’t really go out drinking, I was in a long term relationship and I had terrible Anxiety and Depression related issues. BUT! I knew I wanted to write almost every day about my experiences and my life so that others could find it and have a reference point and someone to ask questions too.

My reasons have evolved over the years such as:

– I love to write every day, it keeps me constantly thinking and in practice

– Mental health is important and needs as much help as possible to beat the stigma

– You don’t get a manual on how to be a student…so you might as well have some true experiences

– I love talking to people! I have some great friends online now, like Caitlin, Alwyn Ash and so many more!

– I had no idea what uni was about and was fed up of generic guides which were all positive!

– I absolutely love it

So why do I blog? For so many different reasons but mostly because I genuinely enjoy it. I’ve had people be SO impressed with the fact that I write nearly every day, but I just see that as normal. It’s not a diary (there would be a lot of swearing if it was) but it’s just me being able to reflect and share that with you all.

So I’m nearly two year in now and I love it. I plan to carry on this blog for as long as I possibly can really. I also want it to get better! I have already started my weekly book reviews, a few opinion pieces and I will be starting more top 10 and uni advice blogs! I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this and if you’re even slightly considering creating your own blog, go and do it! Why not! Drop me a comment with your blogs below and I will try to follow as many as possible.

Thanks for reading guys and check back in tomorrow for a new book review! Also can I please say thank you SO much to everyone who has followed me, I now have 600 followers! I want to get to 1000 by Christmas and who knows I might do some kind of prize…ohhhhhhh!
