How Blogging Helped Me Get Jobs

I’ve been blogging for a long time. I started my first blog at 17, it was just for book reviews and an excuse to keep all of the books I had accumulating in my bedroom. I never dreamed at that age that blogging would help me get jobs. I don’t think I’ve ever had an interview where blogging hasn’t been bought up – in a good way!

People will look you up on the internet before a job interview, that’s just the way of the world now. How much they stalk  find out varies from person to person – which is worth keeping in mind if there’s stuff on a blog you’d rather people didn’t know in a professional sense.

It shows you can write

A big part of blogging is writing. No matter what you choose to write about from beauty to books and beyond, you’re writing. You’ll also develop your own style and opinions.

Almost all jobs require writing at some point. It might be emails, it could be proposals or reports. Even if you have an outside adventurous job you’ll probably need to be able to write.

It showcases so many other skills too

I’ve learnt so many skills blogging. I create graphics, I’ve learnt about SEO, marketing. I probably wouldn’t have the job I have now if I hadn’t started blogging. You can really show these off in a blog.

It shows you have a good understanding of digital

Digital is the future. People can try and deny it but it’s true. This kind of follows on from what I was saying about showcasing skills. You also understand the pace of online vs other media. Always a good thing.

It shows a little bit of you as a person!

No matter what you blog about, this shows insight into who you are. Are you into books, movies, politics? This gives a flavour and a lot of companies value getting to know the person they are going to hire. After all, you can spend more time with your colleagues than your family!

So, that’s my list, I’d love to know what you would add! Let me know in the comments below!

Ask Me His Name – Elle Wright

The loss of a child is something no parent should have to go through but when they do – so many people are too scared to talk. How do you speak to someone who’s baby didn’t come home? Are you going to make it worse? Should you talk about the baby, use its name? After the loss of her own son, Teddy, Elle Wright wanted to do something.

Wow, this book. It’s hard to talk about because while it was a hard book, there were also times where I smiled. This is, ultimately, a message of hope, change and getting through something unimaginable. I actually first heard about the book in a news article and I felt I had to read it – partially because I know people who have lost babies. I wanted to try and see the world through their eyes.

Elle does not hold back throughout. She takes us deep into how she felt at the time. From her joy to be pregnant, her wishes for her baby all the way to Teddy’s struggles once born, holding her son as he passed and trying to make sense of her life after. She isn’t afraid of hiding her pain but also her frustration at being put in a box for grieving mothers.

Of course, this is a tough read. I needed to take quite a few breaks when reading it. While the book was beautifully written, of course, you do get very emotional. I felt my heart break for Teddy’s parents, his family. I wanted to cry because this is sad, but every time I was picked up by the fundraising they undertook, the hope they had and ultimately, love.

One of the best things about this book is that, at the end, we hear from the people who were around Elle – and also loved Teddy. We hear from Teddy’s Dad, Grandma, Aunt. We often think of how heartbreaking this is for the parents, but you can guarantee that there are more people than we know who are touched by baby loss.

To rate a book like this feels wrong, how can you rate someone’s pain? You can’t. That said, this was an incredible book, more than anything I want to thank Elle for sharing with us, for talking about Teddy. I can’t say that I understand just from reading this book, but now I have insight. This is written in such a beautiful way, while it is raw it also shows a real warmth. I can’t stop thinking about this book. Of course, it’s a 5-star read, I think everyone should read this.

Thank you to Elle, the publishers and Netgalley for my copy.

October 2018 Favourites!

I hate to alarm you but we are now officially in Christmas countdown mode, ok well I am at least. We’re into November and October already feels like a distant dream. So, let’s jump into some October favourites.

Books

My reading may have slowed down a little, but it doesn’t mean that I haven’t read some excellent books. I got my hands on the fantastic Feminists Don’t Wear Pink and Other Lies – I will be writing a full review but this is one of the best non-fictions of the year. I also got to My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness, a manga memoir about mental illness, loneliness and sexuality. I’ve also picked Saga up again and I please go into this incredible series knowing you will feel all the feels.

Rip It Up

My boyfriend has been away on tour for the past 2 months and so I got to go and see the show he’s been working on – Rip It Up The 60s. I went to both Reading (where I spent the day before with him too) and then Guildford. He also got us tickets to meet this year’s stars! My sister may have been a little star struck to meet Aston…

Heathers (Again)

I already professed my love for Heathers The Musical before but I went to see it again, this time in the West End! As always it was perfect and this time I got to go with one of my oldest friends, Lucy, and fellow godmother to the munchkins Tori.

London

I’ve been going into London more and more recently. Mostly it’s for events like Heathers, where I managed to meet Joe after for a catch-up and a late Primark visit. I also went up with my Mum for a book event (more on that later) and a mooch around Oxford Street on the coldest day so far!

Lego

Yep, more lego. Ali got me the Great Hall for my birthday. It is amazing and I now have my eye on the Hogwarts castle…problem is it’s £300 and I don’t think that’s on the cards just yet.

New Hair!

Oh heeey didn’t recognise you there 🙈. Yep, I took the plunge and decided to change up my hair with two shades of red. My hairdresser Millie is AMAZING, you can find her on Instagram here.

Jodi Picoult

I got to meet the lovely Jodi Picoult again! Jodi is an incredible writer and I’ve reviewed her latest novel here. Not only is she a boss author she’s also not afraid to speak her mind. She also liked my jumper.

Cold Weather essentials for spoonies

Cold Weather Essentials For Spoonies!

Brr, it’s chilly!

Very few people love the freezing cold, but when you’re a Spoonie (a name for someone who has a chronic illness) it can be a bit of a nightmare. For me, personally, the bold really makes my joints ache so it’s easy to feel a bit miserable and grumpy. So, it got me thinking, what are my essentials for the cold weather as a Spoonie?

A Good Coat

Ok, I’m going to sound like your Mum. I was young and cool once and wanted to just wear a hoodie and no coat. Those days are OVER. Spending money on a warm coat is a good idea because staying warm is key (you’ll see a theme through this post). I’ve had coats from Superdry for the past few years and can highly recommend them.

Hat and Scarf

I have a really cosy Gryffindor scarf that I absolutely love and top it off with a matching red hat (go, go Gryffindor). These can make all the difference for keeping yourself warm and you can get some really cute ones too! Also when I was leaving the house and it was -5 outside they were essential.

Gloves

I lose gloves all the time. Every single year. Which is why I try not to buy ones that are really expensive. As nice as keeping your fingers toasty is, for me it’s much more important that the thicker material on my wrists keeps them nice and toasty as my wrists can get very sore when it gets to the minus numbers.

2018

Hot Water Bottle

I’ve been known to take a hot water bottle to work. I have absolutely no shame in that. They are an amazing invention. Cold at night? Hot Water Bottle. Achy joints? Hot Water Bottle. Period Cramps? Hot Water Bottle. They rule all! You can also get them really cheap on Amazon or in Primark etc. Mine was under £5 a few years ago.

Blankets

I have a thing about blankets. Pro tip, Primark have amazingly snuggly blankets. I’ve got probably 7 or 8 blankets, most of them are Disney. I love them and you can find me every night snuggled up with a blanket.

Fluffy Socks

Do I really need to explain these? Good for keeping your feet warm, they’re fun and you can slide across the floor.

Warm Drinks

All the tea for me!

Witches of St Petersburg

Blog Tour – The Witches of St Petersberg by Imogen Edwards-Jones

Now Halloween might have been yesterday but I’m all about Witches, give me a witchy book any day. So when I was asked if I wanted to be a part of the Witches of St Petersberg Tour, of course, I said yes.

Historical Fiction is something that I enjoy, however, I have never read a novel set in Russia. I know little about the history of the country – apart from the film Anastasia which, spoiler alert, isn’t quite accurate. Sorry guys. Anyway back to the book, it is a chunky one coming in at over 400 pages but, I can promise you a magical and slightly gruesome read.

The novel focuses on Melitza and Stana, daughters of the king of Montenegro and their relationship with the last Tsarina of Russia, Alexandra. Based loosely on the lives and the relationship of the three women- the novel tells of the sister’s ambitions to climb the Russian Court. In doing so, they must help the Tsarina produce a son for Russia, whatever the cost.

If you like a lot of detail, the scandal of life within a royal court and a dash of mystic and magic, I think you would like this – I’m certainly enjoying reading it! That said, this is not a novel for the faint hearted or those with a weak stomach, things can get a little gruesome at times and there is a lot of ghostly activity between these pages. Although I am a total wuss and I thought it was really fascinating.

A huge thank you to Midas PR, Imogen Edwards Jones and Harper Collins for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for this post. If you do like the sound of The Witches of St Peterburg it comes out TOMORROW! As always make sure to let me know what you think!

Why Sleep Is So Important For My Mental Health

I love to sleep. For me the idea of curling up in PJs at the weekend and getting a solid 10 hours is bliss. I know, I know, I’m 23 years old, surely I don’t need that much sleep. I thought so too until I worked out that, actually, sleep can completely change my mental state. So, why is sleep so important for my mental health?

Before I had Depression or Anxiety, I knew that if I didn’t sleep, I wasn’t in the best mood. My sister is the same if we’re tired we’re easily annoyed and I get particularly emotional. Joy of joys but I could deal with it, I was just grumpy doing so. Then when I was a teenager I realised that a lack of sleep meant much more, it made me get a lot sicker. I struggled with my emotions, even more, to make sense of what was going on with me. It took on another meaning.

In my recovery and fight with mental illness over the past decade, I’ve had to make sleep a priority. And I’ve also had to be kinder to myself. In uni pulling an allnighter wasn’t an option for me, the emotional drain the next day from not sleeping was not worth it. I started making sure I had a plan for busy times to make sure I could get my 8 hours and be as mentally healthy as possible. Did it always work? Of course, it didn’t! But I had the knowledge and knew that sometimes if I felt down that was why.

Just as I managed that and was happy, I broke my spine. Even after I recovered I found the fatigue getting worse and worse, impacting me mentally and physically.  Eventually, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, which meant sleep was even more important as it now impacts me physically.

Why am I writing about this? A lot of people who prioritise sleep are deemed ‘lazy’ or ‘boring’, I’ve been in the situation so many times. A lot of people claim that, because of my age, I should be out and partying and shouldn’t need sleep. You know what I do and even if it didn’t impact my health it’s my choice.

Are you a fellow sleep lover? Let me know in the comments below!

Book Review: A Spark Of Light – Jodi Picoult

A Spark of Light - Jodi Picoult

A normal morning changes multiple lives forever. After calls come in that a shooting has taken place in a Women’s Reproductive Health clinic, negotiator Hugh heads to the scene, what he doesn’t realise is that his 15-year-old daughter is one of the hostages.

I’ve been a Picoult fan for almost 10 years and devour her books when they come out. So, of course, I was itching to get my hands on a copy of her latest novel and as soon as I heard the subject matter I really wanted to see how she would tackle this topic. She isn’t afraid of taking on complicated issues.

As always, we are introduced to a wide range of characters, all of whom have their own complex backgrounds, thoughts and emotions. You see a snapshot into their worlds at that time. A doctor that works because of his faith, a nurse who cares for others no matter what, a pro-life campaigner caught in the crossfire, a woman who has chosen to have an abortion.

This novel is different from Picoult’s others in the way that it plays out, and initially, this threw me. This works backwards from the point of conflict to how the situation started. From this perspective, the novel was a little difficult to follow at times I was unclear who was who and how they were related for the first few chapters. So be aware of this is you are a die-hard Picoult fan.

I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of the novel to read on my Kindle. I’m hoping that the final novel makes it more obvious when the narrative changes, but this is minor in relation to the novel itself. There is a richness within that shows so many perspectives and ultimately, this is a novel about choice.

I gave this novel 4 stars. I thought it was well written and showed an interesting perspective. As always I could have read another 300 pages about these characters, about their lives beyond the events of this novel. Of course, it broke my heart at times and I’m pretty sure it will for most people.

Thank you to the publisher, Netgalley and Jodi Picoult for this advanced copy. You can get your own copy on the 30th October!

Twenties: A Poem

Twenties – a poem.

‘When it’s not your day, your week, your month’

That’s what they sang in Friends.

That’s what your twenties were meant to be like.

I’ll tell you it’s not my day –

I hope it’s not the same for the bloody decade.

I’m trying to find a flat,

that won’t bleed me dry.

Trying to make a living and save,

but my car just died.

I’m pretty damn fed up,

with the lies we were told.

Get a degree, you’ll be so much better off,

Really pal? I’ll get a mortgage when I’m a 40-year-old.

Some of my friends are getting married

Others of them have kids.

Meanwhile, I have alcohol and cheese

as the basics in the fridge.

If my twenties are the best

I want a refund.

I’m almost halfway through

so, when does this get fun?

Books to get you in the mood for Halloween

Books To Get You In The Mood For Halloween But Won’t Scare You Silly!

It’s almost that time of year again! With a few days to go, it’s time to get to those Halloween reads! That said, I’m not into scary books. As of right now, I’ve never read a horror and it’s not something I want to read.

That said, I do love some supernatural, a little different and maybe spooky. I know I’m not the only one! Here are some novels to get you in the mood without scaring you silly!

25365584.jpg

The Graces – Laure Eve

One word. Witches. I was lucky enough to meet Laure Eve at YALC this year and I may have freaked out because I loved this book so much. This caused chills, we’re talking a modern-day witchy thriller. Make sure to read it before the second novel is released in January!

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone

I debated putting the Chamber of Secrets on here BUT you have to start at the beginning! Of course, Harry Potter was going to be on here. Pumpkin Pasties, a Halloween fest, magical creatures! This just screams Autumn and Halloween.

Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre – Charlotte Brontë

Yep, throwing a classic out there. There are some chilling moments in Jane Eyre and supernatural elements as well as the beautiful description. I wouldn’t say this is overly Halloween but it’s a nod to the vibe.

12873.jpg

Rebecca – Daphne Du Maurier

I read this while at uni and this is a twisty, quite dark thriller. It has similar vibes to Jane Eyre but I definitely think it has more of a mystery element and ghosts. Can’t forget the ghosts!

Toil and Trouble

Toil and Trouble – Edited by Jessica Spotswood & Tess Sharpe

The newest on this list! An anthology about Woman and Witchcraft and I am loving it! There’s a mix of modern and older tales and a lot of diversity. I’m getting more into anthologies and this was an absolutely amazing addition to my shelves as something I can pick up read a few stories and come back to.

That’s a few of the reads I’d suggest! Is there anything I’m missing? Let me know in the comments below!

What’s Happening To My Blog?!

Hello, hello, hello

Well, I’m writing this when I should be cleaning my flat – procrastination at its finest, am I right. That’s all you need to know about me even when I’m procrastinating I’m still doing something. Anyway, I digress.

I’ve noticed both this month and last month that my stats have dropped. Part of me didn’t want me to admit this – I see so many bloggers getting amazing opportunities, growing their followers and talking about the 1000+ views they get a day. It’s easy to hide away and feel down.  And I did – I try with my blog and not seeing it go up does frustrate me. BUT there is a reason.

Earlier in the year, my blog was what I did every night, any spare moment I had was spent on the blog and it grew. Every year I eagerly watched as my stats nudged up and it made me feel like I achieved something. I paid so that I could edit my SEO better this was a huge thing for me.

I still love my blog BUT as most of you know, back in the summer I became a freelancer. That is amazing in itself (update to come soon) but it takes up a lot of my time. I am working a lot because as you know there are no guarantees as a freelancer. Work, work, work – am I right? Because of this, I’ve had to cut back a bit on the blog.

This is not, in any way, me stepping away from the blog. I might not have thousands of views a day, deals with big businesses or get trips around the world because of my blog (although, I 100% would do that) BUT it’s something I love to do. So, while I might be stepping back slightly to get this off the ground – I’m not going anywhere.

Sorry guys, I think you’re stuck with me!
