The Kindness of Others

Livin’ The Vida Lockdown: Day Three – The Kindness of Others

Tonight at 8pm I stood at my window and clapped. Living in a block of flats and trying to isolate means the window was the best option. And when I cracked it open all I could hear was hands clapping…and it gave me a little bit of hope.

I’d be lying if I said the past few weeks hadn’t been tough on my mental health – I think they have been for all of us. My anxiety and panic attacks have increased and most of my ways have coping have been taken away. To put it simply the world had become a pretty dark and scary place.

When I can though, I try and list the good things in this, the little bits of hope that come through. For me personally, I’ve had the support of a fantastic team, my neighbour has grabbed us some bits while we can’t leave the house while my family dropped over much needed pads. We’ve had so many offers of support from friends and family too. Also, I’ve been told that some of my wonderful followers have sent me things from my Amazon wish list. I am so touched.

While my brain might be trying to tell me that everything is awful and getting out of bed is more difficult, these little rays of sunshine do so much. In all of this, there is kindness, there are good people. I am not trying to play down that things are scary right now – they are, but finding hope in all this is all we can do.

From Rogue One, remember:

“What Is It They’ve Sent Us?” “Hope.”

Things I Can't Wait To Watch On Disney+

Things I Can't Wait To Watch On Disney+

Today Disney+ came out in the UK, FINALLY. It’s come at a pretty good time when staying in an binging is socially encouraged. While I’m not normally one to watch a lot of TV, Disney is different.

Like many of you, this is what I was brought up on. Disney VHS tapes were piled up in my childhood home, my Mum and I went to Disneyland Paris whenever we possibly could (because coach trips to Disney were hella cheap in the 1990s…yes I am that old).

I’ve taken a peak at what we’re going to be able to watch and here are some things that I’m really looking forward to.

Star Wars (Obviously)

If you haven’t noticed I absolutely adore Star Wars. I have my own lightsaber, I cosplay as Rey and my hamsters past and present are named after characters. Am I going to sit and watch everything to do with Star Wars including The Mandalorian? Ummm yeah.

Marvel (Also, obvious)

Every Marvel film and I fully intend to catch up on ones that I missed and watch them in order of the stories. I’ve been waiting a long time to do this. Also looking forward to the new stuff that Disney will be putting out.

Hercules

So I’m planning to watch both the 1997 film AND the TV series because I absolutely love this movie. I know that it’s really inaccurate but it’s just so much fun and the songs were absolutely excellent. I remember watching a lot of the series on the Disney Channel growing up.

Robin Hood

C’mon own up, who also had questionable feelings for this fox? Go on, I know you did. Again this is another one I watched on repeat when I was younger, I absolutely adored it…or adored the fox. We’ll never know.

The Little Mermaid Trilogy

You might not have known there was a trilogy, so there’s an exciting surprise for you. The first Little Mermaid, the OG, has a huge place in my heart and is one of my favourite films of all time.

The second one is also brilliant and I still remember getting it on video and Christmas. The third one I didn’t watch as much but has a banging song. I would highly recommend.

Peterpan 1 & 2

Peter Pan is amazing which is why you queue so long at any and all Disney parks to go on the ride that has definitely aged and as an adult is slightly creepy.

Peter Pan 2 is set as Wendy is grown up with her daughter Jane who does not believe…have I hooked you yet? I hope so, I’m damn excited.

The Cinderella Trilogy

The same with our friend Ariel, there are actually 3 Cinderella movies that you might not know about. The second one is about her life learning to be a princess and one of the step-sisters trying to find true love.

Cadet Kelly

This was a Disney Channel movie that I had to watch whenever it was on. It stars Hilary Duff as a teenager who gets sent to a military school where her new step-dad works. I was (and still am) pretty much a sucker for anything with Hilary in it.

Kim Possible

What’s the sitch?

Not only was she a redhead spy school girl saving the world but she was also a cheerleader. Hellloooooo? Have you heard of anything more early 2000s. Kim was great and so was the movie which will ALSO be streaming guys.

Tarzan and Jane

This series was BANGING and much more fun than the film so I’m going to get through a couple of episodes and probably watch the film. Although that has *slightly* been ruined for me now I know Tarzan is Elsa and Ana’s brother.

Recess

Another of my Disney Channel staples, I always wanted to be a Spinelli, but I ended up being more of a Gretchen…

The Emperor’s New Groove

This is just so weird and so wonderful and a perfect distraction right now.

Freaky Friday (2003 version)

Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis absoultely killed it in this film. It was absolutely hilarious and is a pretty good feel good film and apparently as well as the original as well as a new version will also be available.

Herbie Fully Loaded

I really liked Lindsay Lohan ok?

The Lizzie McGuire Movie

Four words. Sing to me Paolo.

Moana

I have a confession to make…I haven’t seen Moana yet. I know, I KNOW! But this is my chance to finally catch up and probably fall in love with it like everyone else.

The Muppets

There’s going to be Muppet Movies and Muppet Babies, although my favourite The Muppets Take Manhattan hasn’t been seen yet I’m hoping it will make an appearance.

Tangled

Probably my favourite of the new princesses and I really do love the soundtrack a lot, plus When Will My Life Begin is pretty apt for what’s going on right now I think.

Wreck It Ralph

Again one of my newer favourites but Vanelope’s sass can get me through pretty much anything. Also there is a whole land that is basically all puns and if you knew the guy I was marrying you’d know that was very important to me.

Toy Story

So, definitely the first 2 because I adore them both. Also, confession, I probably prefer Toy Story 2 because it has Jessie in it and she was my go to dress up character when I was 5, Princesses were out and Cowgirls were in.

As for 3, I don’t think I’m emotionally stable enough right now and I haven’t watched 4 because how can you top that ending that made me a sobbing mess? Exactly.

The Suite Life

Another Disney Channel throwback for me, this was another thing I watched all the time when I got home from school. I also had a crush on both Dylan and Cole and I was right to, have you seen Cole lately?!

Disney’s Fairytale Weddings

I was never going to have a big Princess Disney wedding, no matter how much my Mum dream and tried. That said I do think they’re adorable and you can bet I’ll be snuggling down with a cup of tea and a stack to tissues to watch this one.

The Simpsons

A classic and I am so, so glad to have them all in one place.

This was not spon, I wish it was, but no I’m going to be paying for my subscription just like the rest of you.

What are you looking forward to watching? Anything to recommend? Let me know in the comments below!

What I Read In December 2019

What I Read In December 2019

December was a funny old month, I thought I hadn’t read anything and then all of a sudden I browse my Goodreads and realise I’ve actually done pretty well in a super busy month.

So here’s what I read in December!

The Perfect Dress – Louisa Leaman

This was a sweet but intriguing read. I haven’t read a book about weddings for a long time but as I’m starting to try and find my own it seemed fitting that I would read this novel and I’m so glad I did. Romance, history, intrigue I absolutely adored this book! A solid 4.5 stars from me

I was sent this by the publisher in exchange for an honest review which is coming soon!

Tunnel of Bones – Victoria Schwab

The second in the Cassidy Blake series and another that I had to keep reading at every spare moment I had thanks to my Secret Santa (thanks Izzy!). Even more creepy than the first and made me just want to read more, the 3rd novel in the series comes out this year and I am SO here for it!

Break The Fall – Jennifer Iacopelli

You guys are going to want to read this when it’s released because it’s bloody incredible. This is focused on an abuse scandal in the USA gymnastics team (similar to what we have unfortunately seen recently). A stunning debut with incredible chronic pain representation. 5 star read without a doubt.

Love Her Wild – Atticus

I’ve been intrigued by this collection of poetry for a while, partly because it’s a hardback poetry collection and partly because it has beautiful images. It’s very short and some wouldn’t consider it poetry but I thought it was beautiful. 4 stars from me.

Journey to The Rise of Skywalker: Allegiance – Ethan Sacks

This was ok, but that was about it for me. I understand they couldn’t give much away before the films release but I just didn’t care much for it so it only got a 3 star rating from me.

The Truth About Magic – Atticus

The third collection of Atticus’s work, although I thought it was the second. I wouldn’t say this was hugely different to the first but I still found it very enjoyable and a great book to dip into. 4 stars.

Drawing Europe Together – Various

I got this from my friend Charissa for Christmas and it was a lovely, although slightly sad read. Beautiful illustrations and wonderful ideas. 4 stars.

This is How You Lose the Time War – Amal El – Mohtar & Max Gladstone

I’m going to put it out there that most of the time while reading this I had no idea what was going on through a lot of the book but I adored it. Beautifully written and full of a strange kind of love but so, so wonderful. If you don’t mind me confused while appreciating great writing then I’d definitely read this one. 4 stars from me.

Did you get much reading done in December? Let me know what your favourites were!

What I Got For My 25th Birthday!

I asked over on Twitter (@chlometzger, if you’re not already following) if anyone would like to see what I received for my birthday this year and 90% said yes, so lucky you. This year I had a truly wonderful time and felt so loved, so much so it knocked me for six. If any of you reading were a part of it, thank you so much.

So, let’s get into the gifts.

This was a huge surprise but SO exciting, I absolutely love Loungefly bags. I didn’t expect my Mum to find one so it was a big surprise when I opened the box it came in! An R2-D2 Loungefly bag!!

I also got the Lego Knight bus, within 24 hours of recieving it I’d finished building it and now I’m eyeing up the castle set again…my bank account does not agree with this decision. I also got a super cute balloon.

Now let’s get around to the books! From my friend Charissa I received Two Can Keep A Secret & The Confessions of Frannie Langton both of which I’ve been waiting to read for ages. My friend Sarah got me Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me, an LGBT graphic novel I’ve heard a LOT about.

Next up are two books I bought with a gift card from a special rabbit (yes, you read that right) so I picked up the graphic novel of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and the City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab.

My parents got me A Very Large Expanse of Sea, another book I’ve been meaning to get to for a while. I also received a copy of Archie 1941 from my friend Joe because he knows I’ve been waiting for it to come out as a trade rather than single issues. He also got me a Saga pin for my jacket and another that says Birthday Stud…I proudly wore it around London.

Ali did good this year, I’ve been thinking about getting some better headphones for a while now and he found me these and they are a dreeeeeam. Also got them in my favourite colour – he’s going to be a good husband.

Next up my grandparents got me this beautiful shirt with animals all over, so damn cute. They also got me a Lush set which is perfect because as the weather gets colder I want to have ALL OF THE BATHS. It also included one of my all time favourites, Sex Bomb.

My lovely Lucy and godkids got me Coda, I don’t know much about it but I’m looking forward to a new graphic novel. She also painted a picture of me and Ali which she’s still finishing up – it’s incredible and I’ll be sharing it on my Instagram (@chloemetz_) when it’s ready!

I was also lucky enough to get a new Pandora charm from my Mother-in-Law because she’s bloody adorable.

Next up some more gifts from friends Abbie, Ben & Sarah. I got some new fox socks, some new kick ass badges for my jacket. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate my friends love for my butt. Loving it.

I also got 2 new notebooks and a pack of yummy fudge! And I also got a handmade jumper (my friends Mum is secretly Mrs Weasley) it is so warm and snuggly. This is my second jumper like this and again, it’s in my favourite colour.

I’ve finally reached the age where my family will buy me chocolate and alcohol for my birthday hallelujah. 4 different type of Hotel Chocolate that I haven’t tried before and some Chocolate Gin? HELL TO THE YES. Also, so far, so delicious.

My sister came through too with new make-up. Another amazing Naked palette which is amazing and looks so good. She also got me some more brushes which she’ll teach me to use and some new lipstick to try.

What more needs to be said? My grandparents know. Also, look at this cute Fox they also go me! He’s called Basil.

I have wanted some of these cupcakes from this specific lady for a few years and as a surprise my Mum got these made for me. They didn’t last long but tasted so, so good.

Also there were some great Harry Potter gifts. My friend Corrie went and found me a new list pad and some badges as well as some lovely chocolaty goodies too.

My Mum also found these ADORABLE little Harry Potter plushies and aren’t they so cute? I love them.

She also found me a personal size Gryffindor cake. Currently, it’s survived all the eating but I’m sure it will disappear soon…

I was also lucky enough to receive money, although obviously there’s no need for pictures of that!

So there it is! The wonderful gifts I received for my 25th birthday! Are there any you like the look of? Let me know in the comments below!

April Favourites!

We’re at the end of April already! It’s been a fairly quiet month for me in terms of buying/reading (click here to find out why) BUT I still have a few favourites for you!

Books:

31577750

Anne Boleyn The Final 24 Hours

I absolutely love learning about the Tudors, I love factual books, fiction and fine Anne Boleyn one of the most interesting Queens. I bought this on my kindle and read it on my phone within 24 hours. A very different take on events looking not just at Anne, but also other key people at this time. Definitely a good read for any other Tudor lovers.

30842471

Cheer Up Love – Susan Calman

I’ve really wanted to read this for a while, I hadn’t known Susan as a comedian so I didn’t really know about that aspect of her but this was a really interesting look at depression and her experience with it. I really appreciated her honesty and humour. Definitely a recommended read.

30521409

Supergirl Rebirth

I haven’t picked up much of the DC Rebirth and I was really pleasantly surprised. Supergirl is awesome! She’s a really cool lady and I enjoyed the story, looking forward to picking more of these up.

Music:

Hard Times – Paramore

THEY’RE BACK, THEY’RE BACK, THEY’RE BACK. Legitimately danced to Sainsbury’s to this song. I’m so excited to hear the new album and the evolution of Paramore.

Rebel, Rebel – David Bowie

When I was younger I wasn’t that into Bowie, but since my university opened the Visconti Studio (Tony Visconti worked on a lot of Bowie’s albums) and my boyfriend started working there I’ve been listening to a lot. I’ve had this on repeat.

With or Without You – Emma Blackery

This has been stuck in my head since I first heard it.

Say You Won’t Let Go – James Arthur

I’ve had a rough month and Ali has been absolutely brilliant, this song reminds me of him.

Watching:

Game of Thrones

I. am. obsessed. I’m half way through season four and I have no doubt I’ll get to the end of season six in time for the new series.

Tribute to Carrie Fisher

I was heartbroken when Carrie died back in December, I was lucky enough to meet her and cried many tears after her death. The celebration of her life at Star Wars Celebration this year was wonderful and left me sobbing.

Emma Blackery

I’ve been a fan of Emma’s channel for a few years and this month she’s doing a challenge and doing really well. Killing it as always.

Feminist Fridays: Why I’m excited about some dolls.

As we all know, little girls are expected to like and play with dolls of all variety, I was no different. I had a box of Barbies, piles of Polly Pockets and stacks of generic Baby Dolls. There was something missing though, of course my Barbies started to have jobs (Vet Barbie was a personal favourite), but they rarely kicked butt. They didn’t say to me that girls could be as cool as boys in films, that we weren’t confined to pink and only pink. I didn’t get into Star Wars until I was 20 but damn I needed it. I needed to be reminded that women were powerful and could lead a war.

There are going to be new Star Wars Dolls for Star Wars: Forces of Destiny to accompany a new TV show. I read the news over on the brilliant Heroic Girls and when I saw these dolls I had a wave of excitement. These were posable dolls of some of the most fearless women in the galaxy. Of course, these are going to be collected by fans but for the little girls of today? Little girls who have seen Star Wars and what a girl can do, these dolls are something else. Of course, as time goes by we are starting to see more kick ass dolls on the market, ones that appeal to both boys and girls. Let’s not forget the boys in this, the ones who are told that ‘dolls are for girls’, WRONG.

When I was a kid I used to draw these dolls called ‘Jenny’, I used to draw her in every job that I knew, particularly jobs that I knew people said that boys did. The dolls weren’t there for me so I designed my own. That and I know for a fact one of the boxes for Army Barbie came with the slogan ‘hat and short skirt too!’ Yeah, because that’s going to help when the enemy is firing at you, a short skirt.

Corny or not, kids are the future. How can we expect them to be any better if we don’t teach them about equality as children. That girls and boys can be what they want and play with the toys I want.

Damn right I’m excited about these dolls, and I hope it’s just the beginning.

Carrie – An Icon

15781400_10155656240933206_659974706849669402_n

I’m writing this with a heavy heart and tear stained cheeks, today the world lost an incredible woman, Carrie Fisher, her death was confirmed by daughter Billie’s publicist. To many Carrie will be remembered as Princess Leia, but she was so, so much more. I met Carrie only a few weeks ago and still can’t get my head around how this fun loving woman who crouched down to sign a little girls wheelchair without so much as a second thought is no longer with us, the world is cruel.

Of course Carrie was Princess Leia, but it’s not all she should be remembered for. She had a no BS attitude to life, which was apparent in her interviews. She was also an incredibly talented writer publishing three memoirs, a handful of novels and also working on screenplays in her life too. Carrie had a way with words that I can only dream to have, I’m thankful she took the time to have a London signing.

While Star Wars makes me happier than most things, it’s not the the thing I’ll remember Carrie most fondly for. She was open and honest about her struggles with addiction and life with Bipolar Disorder. When I met Carrie I wanted to thank her for that, when I did she seemed surprised and said ‘well I have a voice, when you can speak out you should, you know?’ There was nothing more to it. Carrie knew that she could make a big change and she did. For a star of her size to talk so openly about mental illness opened people’s minds. Carrie took the label of ‘crazy’ in her stride, she laughed about it, she made people realise it was ok to laugh. She made mental health come into the conversation, because she wasn’t ashamed. I didn’t get into Star Wars until I was 20, but finding out about Carrie changed my life. I devoured her books and interviews because she became an icon to me.

We have lost a beautiful soul, I can’t help but think of her daughter Billie, her dogs and the rest of her family at this time. She meant so much to so many, but at the end of the day she was someone’s Mum, Sister, Daughter and I cannot imagine the heartbreak they are facing right now.

Rest in Peace Carrie, and May The Force Always Be With You.
