Blogmas 2020 - My Top TV Picks Of The Year

Blogmas 2020 – My Top TV Picks Of The Year

So as my friends will tell you I am not the best at keeping up with TV shows, I still haven’t got up to date with The Boys, I’m always late to the party when it comes to new releases and I just don’t watch much. We only got a TV at the start of 2020 – that was a good decision by my fiancé considering how much time we spent at home this year.

For once I can actually write about my TV faves because I have some, winner! Also just having the TV there has really helped, sometimes I’ll just put something on in the background or if I’m in flare then I can just watch something I don’t need to think about. Anyway, let’s crack on.

The Mandalorian

I was late to the game but GUYS I’m obsessed with The Mandalorian. Baby Yoda has my whole heart and makes me cry all the time because he’s just so damn cute. I adore this series. It’s so well written and even though season 2 isn’t finished I’m so excited for season 3.

The Crown

I thought this was a strong season of The Crown. There were some incredible episodes and I think the younger cast members have been brilliant and I really hope it gives them a platform to go on to big things in the future. I didn’t warm to Olivia Coleman as the Queen as much as I did Claire Foy but what can you do?

For All Mankind

My fiancé got me into this and it was hooked. This is an alternative history, what if Russia put man on the moon first? It’s also got me really interested in Space – so much so that I have stolen his copy of the Tim Peak book. It’s on Apple TV but I think it’s well worth it.

Unsolved Mysteries

The Netflix reboot is fascinating and also frustrating because as the title suggests, they’re all unsolved. It’s great if you like coming up with theories though. There’s currently 2 seasons online and I am keeping everything crossed it gets renewed for season 3.

Miss Americana

Another Netflix watch but this time a documentary. I’ve been in and out of love with Taylor Swift since I was in my teens. I wasn’t keep on Reputation as an album but she won me back with 1989 and Lover, and Folklore is stunning. This documentary showed and entirely different side to her and I could appreciate her as a person and an artist. It’s definitely worth a watch and the song that she released with it Only The Young is brilliant.

What have you been watching in 2020? Give me your recommendations below!

My Top Shows On Netflix

10 Of My Favourite Shows On Netflix

I like Netflix, mostly for having something on in the background unless I am really hooked! It’s normally difficult for me to get into films/shows at home but when I find some I like I will watch them again and again.

So, why not share with you some of my favourite shows on Neflix? Some are exclusive to Netflix, some I watched on TV and am so happy that I now have a place to watch them over and over again. Please note these are only shows rather than films or documentaries!

The Fix

This is new to Netflix and I absolutely love it. So much so I binge watched it and really hope for a season 2! A lot of what I watch regularly is comedy (most of my recommendations are stand up specials) so this was a great mix!

American Crime Story: The People Vs OJ Simpson

I wrote a blog post about this when it was on TV, saying how interesting I found it (post here). It’s no wonder that after it came to Netfli I may have watched it once or twice…and then many more times after that. I was an interesting trial and so well acted!

How I Met Your Mother

I’ve loved HIMYM for years, so much so I had every season on DVD while I was at uni and watched it almost every day. This is one of my favourites to put on in the background and just catch up on old episodes.

Come on, you didn’t really think I’d leave Friends out did you? This was a staple for me growing up. I had all the VHS tapes as an early teen, then bought all the DVDs and now sweet, sweet Netflix. It’s a classic TV series and I love it.

Star Trek Discovery

This is an excellent story and has really got me interested in Star Trek. An incredible cast and moments that made me gasp out loud. This is also great if you weren’t an original Trekky (I’d only seen the newer films) you’re not expected to know too much and the first season is all new characters.

I dare you not to be hooked, and if you start now you can binge the whole of series 1, you are welcome.

Bojack Horseman

For me, this is a show I can have on in the background. I’m slowly making my way through, particularly when Ali goes on tour. You don’t have to concentrate too much, it’s something you can absorb and enjoy and sometimes that’s all you need from a TV show.

Rick & Morty

This makes me laugh, it is silly and ridiculous but that’s kind of the point. Ali and I will watch this together while eating sometimes or I’ll make him put it through the speakers of his computer if he has it on.

The Crown

The best Netflix series ever produced. This was a masterpiece, I loved it and I’m so excited for the next season to see what they will do with it. Claire Foy is such an incredible actress too, plus I do love the Royal family!

Next season, for those of you who don’t know, we’ll get a whole new cast replacing those we have come to love including Helena Bonham-Carter and Olivia Coleman.

My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman

This was a great series. Although Letterman isn’t as big over here in the UK I loved his way of interviewing. The Malala interview was my favourite, closely followed by Barack Obama and Tina Fey. More please!

Doctor Who

Matt Smith is my Doctor. I still need to work my way through the earlier episodes of Eccleston and Tennant but I love curling up and putting on old episodes of the Smith era. Everyone has their favourites, don’t @ me.

And that’s that! What else should I be watching on Netflix? I’d love to know your favourites below!

I’m Loving: American Crime Story

As someone who doesn’t have a hooked up TV in their flat, it’s rare I get excited about TV programmes. Over the last few months I’ve kept seeing reports about the OJ Simpson trial, I knew nothing about it but I knew about the name. Nicole Brown-Simpson was murdered the year I was born, so while I have no memory of the trial being on TV I’d heard it mentioned before. The more I read the more interested I got and of course this was all build up to the new FX show, American Crime Story. This looked like it was going to be a great show.

I read and watched a lot to understand background and know the fact before watching the fiction, I wasn’t disappointed. I cannot wait for next week and the next installment, the acting so far has been incredible and I love the angle. There hasn’t been an overwhelming sense of O.J’s guilty or O.J’s not guilty in the first episode which was a relief. I didn’t want to watch something that was incredibly tainted with one person’s view. The fact that the case focuses on those around the case and how it changed their lives is also brilliant to me. Of course, there has been some criticism of the fact that the Kardashians as children will feature BUT the children of O.J and Marcia Clarke are also featured. Robert Kardashian Sr was O.Js best friend, and Kris Jenner Nicole’,s which means that their lives are going to be explored.

The show was fast paced and from what I’ve read is staying close to fact so far. For someone like me, who’s never had an interest in crime shows before to be so hooked they must have done something right. I cannot wait for the next episode and the next and the next. I know I’m going to be clearing time each week to sit down alone and watch, no matter what’s happening that week.

The show also brings up some big issues. The race element is still incredibly relelvent today, 20 years later which is a sad truth. Why is the US still dealing with racism and police brutality? It’s something that, in my opinion, took away from the heart of the case. Two people died, but this was turned into another race issue. Don’t get me wrong I agree that there were and still are great issues between police and the African-American community but for this hugely famous athlete I don’t think it was the case. We’re also confronted with the issue of domestic violence, something incredibly serious. Whether or not O.J Simpson killed Nicole and Ron Goldman, he did assault her. Domestic violence is something that is never ok, towards a man or a woman and from this terrible and shocking murder hopefully there is room for education about domestic violence.

Overall, I’m very excited about this series. It’s going to be a fascinating look at ‘The Trial of the Century’. I’m already thinking about next week and how the famous chase is going to be shot.

How about you guys? Have any of you been watching? What do you think so far?! I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Haaaaaaave you met….who?

Like many people my age I have a slight obsession with the show How I Met Your Mother. If you’ve never watched it you are SERIOUSLY missing out! So I have a joke with my friend Ben. I’m desperate to be his wingman for a night and I will be eventually, despite how much he politely declines. So while I have more of a Lilly vibe going on rather than a Barney I had a great idea. Although in the show it’s used as a chat up line (hence the joke with Ben) I thought it would be a great idea to start a ‘Have you met…’ part of the blog so I can introduce you to all my lovely friends!

I have a lot to do so I don’t know how long this will take, while your waiting why don’t you go and catch up on How I Met Your Mother… I know I’m going to.
